Inhumate (23.05.14)

Hi, Fred! Let’s listen to some Inhumate record and begin! How’re you guys doing now, do you rehearse often?

We rehearse once a week. We were used to do it twice, but a couple of month ago, Damien moved to another city, so thing changed. But everything’s still ok

Unfortunately, your Ukraine tour was cancelled. But I still hope to see you and drink some beer with you!)

Yes, it fucking sucks that this tour was cancelled.  We were still optimistic until the last moment. We’re sure that was possible; Of course we should have to cancel maybe 2 or 3 gigs, but that wasn’t a problem at all. I think the most embarrassed guy is Anatoliy (METAL SCRAP) because I think he did all the job and loses all the money investment…

Next year is Inhumate’s 25-year anniversary! Did you think about something AC/DC style, like, tour with exactly 25 live gigs?)

To be honest, last time we spoke about that, we decided to do nothing by ourselves. But we can always change our minds… So stay tuned ah, ah, ah ! I’m sure that was the answer you were expected!

I remember that you organized underground fest in your country. Tell us a little about it. Why it stopped?

Yes, we started organizing gigs in in area in 1995. Then we did the SOUL GRINDING FESTIVAL (from 2000 to 2007) and the UNITED SICKNESS FEST (from 2008 to 2010). Archives of them are available on our website
We stopped the SGF because ethat was a festival dedicated to unsigned bands (or signed to very small labels) only. After 7 editions and regarding to what the scene was on that period, we thought it was time to stop. On that time it has a meaning being an unsigned band, as almost all bands wanted to be signed on a label, and almost all talented bands could do it. With the USF thing were different. Our idea was to make a “concept” show. First was titled “doctors & butchers”, second was “local area bands”, third was “grind vs death”. We stopped those because less people was visiting the shows at that time and also because we were a bit tired…

Also, Inhumate is pretty conceptual band. I’m not going to ask you too much questions that you’re tired to answer to, but still, tell us about concept of your albums in general. Do you have any thoughts about title of your final album?

Yes, of course ! The 7th and last album will be titled “Eternal Life”. It can be linked to the first one of the concept “Internal Life” and the middle one “Life”.

The crowd really go nuts on your gigs alongside with you, such close contact with public is really great, but don’t you afraid that your backline might break because of that, and not only that, your heads too?)

Ah ! Ah ! It hopefully never happened ! But before asking people to get on stage Christophe always ask ‘em to be careful with the material ! Of course, some guys already felt on the drum kit, but nothing was never broken. About us, we’re enjoying stage sickness, so it’s no problem ! Most important thing is that people have fun & enjoy the gig !

You release your albums by yourself. How’s your label doing? Got enough money from it to buy fuagra and the bottle of red wine?)

Our label, GRIND YOUR SOUL is own by us. So we know exactly where money goes and how. So, we control everything and that’s why we’re able to go on on self production for all those years. The dark (not so dark at all ?) side of it, is that we don’t get a fucking cent from our music since we started. All money we got with INHUMATE stays in the band. It’s something people don’t really understand, asking us why are we still playing after almost a quarter century without getting a fucking cent. We play because we love that fucking music and we don’t do that for money. This particular feeling is the secret of INHUMATE long stable life and availability of self producing.

Christophe still works as a teacher? And besides, do you have patches and antiseptics on your gigs? ‘cause he likes to smash his head with a mic during performance)

Christophe was hitting his forehead with the microphone until he was teacher. Now he is teacher and don’t torture himself anymore ah, ah ! He became a kind of serious guy…. Crazy isn’t it ?

What do you think about life after death? And what do you think about religion in general?

We’re rather agnostic in the band. My personal opinion should be a bit more difficult to explain and I don’t think it may interest the readers. So, about life after death, we all expect that INHUMATE will have one with the last album because life will be eternal for it!

Do you like how your band developed, maybe you have something on your mind that would improve the band?

As told before, we could have expected more, but the way we choose (self production) limited us. We knew that from the beginning and prefer our freedom. Should be a cool feeling to be a rock star ah, ah but we don’t care about that. So, all things we could do to improve INHUMATE’s career and we didn’t do is just because it’s against our philosophy.

It’s hard not to ask about the things that really help to distribute and advertise the band. You know it, Fred: Internet, social networks. Tell us as a man with a lot of experience in this kind of working, what method became most successful for the band to get popular?

Back 20 years ago, things were easy : buying stamps and sending promo stuff to fanzines. Nowadays, things are different. I promote INHUMATE on social networks, but it’s more difficult for me. I don’t feel much pleasure cliking on my computer for links to which almost nobody checks. So, slowly the promotion is getting smaller and smaller. I think that the best promotion way today is playing many concerts, unfortunately we can’t play much because of our private lifes (families, jobs…). So, we try to keep the promotion through social networks, but in a minimum way.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but 7th album is gonna be your last, isn’t it? But I hope that you’re not gonna quit playing guitar and form a new band! Never give up, hehe))

You’re right. “Eternal Life” will be our 7th and last album. After that we will fix a date for INHUMATE’s end. And personally what will I do ? I will stop music. Not listening to or visiting gigs, but playing. My life was turned to INHUMATE for more than 25 years, I think it won’t be possible for me to play in another band…. But let’s wait until that moment, for the time I’m still playing in INHUMATE and the band is still fucking alive he, he !

By the way, you can use the moment and say hi to guys from Epicrise.))

Yeah, sure !!!! EPICRISE was one of my best bands during the last years. Not all their discography, the first releases were good I think, latest less… Becoming more traditional I think… Now it’s a long time I didn’t hear about them. I thought they splitted. So a guy from the band asked for my address on Facebook, I gave him and then silence… I’ll never know what he wanted to tell me…

What do you hate in people most?

Sheep attitude…

Thank you so much for this conversation! And as tradition goes, couple of final words from you.

Thanx a lot to you for supporting us ! Thanx for the interview and promotion we’ll get through it ! Hope to meet you on a stage somewhere and share a fucking beer !
